The Australian Mutual Provident Society was formed in 1849 as a non-profit life insurance company and mutual society.
It was a time when life was tough in New Zealand and Australia and people were at high risk of injury and disease. A small group of community leaders recognised this and looked for a good way to provide financial security for people by establishing the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP).
AMP has grown into a highly efficient large-scale organisation. Today it acts as a financial services company in Australia and New Zealand with superannuation and investment products, insurance, financial advice and banking products including home loans and savings accounts.
