R. Wotherspoon & Co. was a confectionery manufacturer headquartered in Glasgow from at least 1851. The company produced lozenges, boiled sweets, scotch marmalade, jams, jellies and a variety of biscuits.
One of the firm’s best known products was Glenfield Patent Starch. In the 19th century it was fashionable for gentlemen and boys to wear stiffly starched collars, and there were many specialist starches on the market. To ensure that Glenfield starch stood out, Wotherspoon’s used the Royal Family to advertise their product, claiming that it was the only starch used in Queen Victoria’s laundry.
