Romford’s first gas undertaking, with works in South Street, is said to have been established by George M. Bell in 1825. In 1847 the Romford Gas & Coke Co. was formed and took over the works from Bell, who remained manager.
In 1892 the company built new works at Nursery Walk, south of the railway station. The rebuilding and enlargement of the works was begun in 1947. At this time the area of supply covered the Borough of Romford, part of Hornchuch, Stapleford Abbots, Navestock, Kelvedon Hatch and the village of Havering-atte-Bower.
Following the nationalisation of the gas industry the Romford Gas Co. became part of the North Thames Gas Board in 1949.
