Scribbans-Kemp Ltd. was a biscuit, bread and cake manufacturer based in Smethwick, Birmingham.
The business was started sometime prior to 1871 by Thomas Scribbans. When he died in 1904, Scribbans’ two sons, Thomas and John Henry, took over.
The company’s factory in Smethwick, the Universal Cake Factory, employed 1,200 workers at its peak. Scribbans-Kemp later expanded its interests to include retail tobacco and confectionery shops, groceries, supermarkets and wholesale warehouses.
The bakery part of Scribbans-Kemp was acquired by J. Lyons & Co. in 1968.
