South Western Gas Board

The South Western Gas Board was a state-owned utility providing gas to industries and homes in Cornwall, Gloucestershire and parts of Devon, Berkshire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. The Board was established on 1st May 1949, following the nationalisation of the gas industry in the UK, and dissolved in 1973 when it became a Region of the British Gas Corporation.

The Utility used a variety of initials only and full name overprints, including inverted versions. Its also worth looking out for the local division overprints of Bristol, Devenport, Plymouth and Taunton.
