Sweet & Maxwell is a publishing company specialising in legal publications.
It was formed in London in 1889 by the partnership of two booksellers called Stephen Sweet and Alexander Maxwell. In 1897 the company started the publication of the Encyclopaedia of the Laws of England, the first modern work of its kind.
Sweet & Maxwell joined the Associated Book Publishers (ABP) in 1969. ABP was purchased by the Thomson Organisation in 1987 and is now part of Thomson Reuters.
