The UK Total Abstinence Life was formed in London in 1840 and, as the name suggests, the company offered life assurance aimed initially at teetotallers. The insurance company grew and expanded gradually, changing its name to the UK Temperance & General Provident Institution in 1849.
Later this was shortened to the UK Provident Institution, with the head office moving out of London in 1975.
The operational merger of the UK Provident Institution with Friends’ Provident Life Office took place in 1986, with the funds of the two organisations formally merged in 1993.
In March 20011 the company became Friends Life and currently has over 5 million customers worldwide.
