Watson & Philip began as a wholesale grocery business based in Dundee. By 1933, the company also had branches in Glasgow, Leith, and Aberdeen.
Watson & Philip Ltd. was very active in the 1990s, purchasing Amalgamated Foods in 1991, selling SPAR Scotland to C.J. Lang, its main competitor, in 1993, and expanding furiously from 1996 to 1998. However, in 1998 Watson & Philip Ltd. sold its food distribution business to Brake Brothers and changed its name to Alldays. In 1999 Alldays sold off its chain of cash-and-carry businesses. In October 2002, Alldays was placed in receivership to clear the way for its £13 million purchase by The Co-operative Group.
